Our Experience
Transport of modular homes from Poland to Costa Rica
A multimodal logistics operation: road transport, port transhipment and ocean vessel charter
Polish Forwarding Company delivered a full international logistics operation covering forwarding, transport, transhipment and the loading of a large batch of modular homes for export from Poland to Costa Rica. The project required precise coordination of many links in the supply chain, work under time pressure and compliance with strict technical requirements relating to oversized cargo and ocean vessel charter.
Scope of the project
- Origin: Modular home production plant in Poland
- Port of loading: Port of Szczecin (Poland)
- Destination country: Costa Rica (Central America)
- Cargo type: Prefabricated building modules of significant size and unit weight
- Transport mode: Multimodal (road and sea) with full vessel charter
Stage 1: Oversized transport from factory to port
The project began with detailed planning of the road transport from the factory to the sea port in Szczecin. The modular homes had dimensions exceeding permitted road limits, which meant the following was required:
- Securing abnormal load permits in multiple regions
- Arranging police escort and pilot vehicles in line with road traffic regulations
- Managing schedules and routes so that each unit reached the port in line with the charter timetable

Stage 2: Port operations under limited time (laytime)
At the Port of Szczecin the following was organised:
- coordinated collection of all modules from multiple locations
- temporary storage and unit sorting in the port yard
- a precise loading schedule for the chartered vessel, taking into account the short laytime set out in the charter agreement
Given the tight schedule, operational efficiency was essential. A team of experienced port operators and cargo lashing technicians was deployed, which ensured fast and safe loading
Stage 3: Vessel charter, full control over the freight
Given the nature of the cargo and the delivery direction, the following was organised:
- a full ocean vessel charter, matched to the dimensional and logistics requirements (capacity, ramp, securing points)
- loading coordination with the vessel master and the shipping agency
- professional cargo securing on deck using lashing and securing systems compliant with IMO standards
All modules were properly secured for the transatlantic voyage, and the full freight documentation (including consignment notes, packing lists, lashing instructions and stowage plans) was prepared by the team.
