Renfe and Kombiverkehr Begin Operations at the Multimodal Terminal in the Port of Barcelona

13 June 2025 | News

As of June 1, 2025, part of the Morrot multimodal terminal in the Port of Barcelona is managed by Rail Hub Morrot (RHM), a joint venture between two freight operators—Spain’s Renfe Mercancías (60%) and Germany’s Kombiverkehr Intermodal Services (40%).

The tender for the operation of the facility, which covers 77,500 m² of the terminal’s total area of 128,000 m², was launched by the Spanish railway infrastructure operator Adif in November 2024, in response to complaints from cargo owners about service quality. RHM was the sole bidder. The contract, awarded for a period of 6 years, may be extended by an additional 3 years depending on the port authority’s plans for the terminal’s operation. In previous years, the Morrot terminal handled up to 50,000 TEUs annually.

One of the conditions of the contract with RHM is the implementation of a digital Terminal Operating System (TOS) to optimize resource use, reduce costs, and improve service reliability for cargo owners.
