DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo Sign Agreement to Explore Pilot Project Using Nevomo’s MagRail Technology for Autonomous Freight Transport by Rail in India

DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential collaboration on the development and implementation of a pilot project utilizing Nevomo’s MagRail technology for autonomous movement of goods and freight by rail within existing port systems.

DP World, a global leader in smart supply chain solutions, is at the forefront of introducing advanced freight transportation technologies aimed at transforming cargo movement in India. Deendayal Port Authority, a key multi-cargo port under the Government of India, will facilitate the testing of this technology at its terminal in Kandla to assess the feasibility of this forward-looking freight transport system.

This initiative marks a significant step toward building faster, more efficient, and sustainable port-to-hinterland connections and aligns with India’s logistics policy and the PM Gati Shakti program, which aims to modernize and integrate the country’s logistics infrastructure.

The agreement outlines the framework for a 750-meter MagRail pilot project at the Deendayal Port. This first-of-its-kind project in India will demonstrate autonomous freight movement under real port conditions. The goal is to develop and deploy MagRail-based solutions that enable automated movement of rail wagons powered by linear motors on existing railway tracks, enhancing capacity, efficiency, and speed for both container and bulk cargo transportation—while simultaneously reducing costs and CO₂ emissions. This will help make logistics systems greener, faster, and more interoperable.

The MoU was signed by Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA); Rizwan Soomar, CEO and Managing Director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Indian Subcontinent at DP World; and Przemek Pączek, CEO of Nevomo, in the presence of high-ranking officials in Kandla, Gujarat.

Commenting on the signing, Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority, stated:

“This collaboration represents a strategic step forward in enhancing port infrastructure, increasing throughput and operational efficiency to meet the growing demand for freight movement. DP World, as a trusted partner, plays a vital role in this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to strengthening India’s logistics infrastructure and ensuring seamless cargo flow.”

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said:

“At DP World, we are committed to future-proofing our terminals by implementing innovative technologies that redefine cargo movement in the supply chain. Pilot solutions like MagRail align with our ambition to improve speed, efficiency, and sustainability in logistics. By reducing travel times and optimizing infrastructure use, we aim to create greater value for customers, support Deendayal Port Authority in increasing capacity, and contribute to India’s broader trade and connectivity goals.”

During the signing ceremony, Rizwan Soomar, CEO and Managing Director of DP World for the Middle East, North Africa, and Indian Subcontinent, said:

“We believe transformative infrastructure results from collaboration and long-term thinking. The partnership between DP World, Deendayal Port Authority, and Nevomo is a unique opportunity to reimagine the future of freight transport in India. Our commitment goes beyond individual projects. We are working together to accelerate India’s ambitions of expanding and integrating port-led logistics ecosystems while achieving carbon neutrality through the efficient use of cutting-edge infrastructure technologies.”

Przemek Pączek, CEO of Nevomo, added:

“We are proud to participate in this innovative initiative at Deendayal Port to showcase MagRail’s real-world potential in increasing freight transport efficiency, capacity, and flexibility. Collaborating with world-class organizations like DP World and Deendayal Port Authority is a significant step toward developing sustainable logistics in India.”

This groundbreaking collaboration will demonstrate how MagRail technology can automate short-distance freight transport, reduce reliance on internal combustion engine vehicles, and boost terminal efficiency. The pilot project at Deendayal Port aims to set new benchmarks in performance and sustainability, showing how innovation can transform ports into engines of economic growth and global trade competitiveness.
