Norfolk Southern Launches the First Eco-Friendly Freight Corridor in the U.S. — RailGreen

19 May 2025 | News

Norfolk Southern Railway and the Port of Virginia, located on the East Coast of the United States, have announced the launch of freight transport via the country’s first RailGreen corridor, which implements the concept of reducing carbon emissions throughout the entire value chain. The corridor connects the Port of Virginia’s terminals with the Virginia Inland Port (VIP) in the city of Front Royal.

The locomotives operating daily on Norfolk Southern trains along this route are powered by low-emission biofuel. Shippers can purchase RailGreen certificates, thereby demonstrating their commitment to achieving carbon reduction goals across their value chains. Increased certificate sales will allow the railway to expand the use of carbon-neutral fuel. Emissions control (measurement, monitoring, tracking) is carried out through the 123Carbon platform.

The RailGreen initiative reflects the growing interest among shippers in actively monitoring Scope 3 emissions across their value chains. These are emissions for which companies are indirectly responsible throughout the supply chain, and which are often difficult to measure and reduce.

The Port of Virginia is the first on the East Coast to supply all of its terminals exclusively with energy from renewable sources. Combined with Norfolk Southern’s initiatives to use solar energy at freight stations and locomotives powered by carbon-neutral fuel, the RailGreen corridor represents an environmentally efficient alternative for freight transportation.
