At the end of April 2025, Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) launched cross-border grain shipments to Morocco. The first batch of 105 grain wagons was dispatched from the Zhana-Esil and Sarykol stations to the port of Liepaja (Latvia) for transshipment onto ships and further transport to the recipient. In total, 60,000 tons of cargo will be transported in this direction via 17 trains.
As of April 2025, the transit of Kazakh grain through Russian territory in sealed wagons or containers with phytosanitary certificates has been exempted from the import ban on such goods into the Russian Federation, which had been in effect since October 2024.
In the first four months of 2025, KTZ transported 4.7 million tons of grain cargo (+54% compared to the same period in 2024), of which 3.7 million tons were exported (+60%). In the first quarter, the volume of transported grain cargo grew by 49% and 52%, respectively. From September 2024 to April 2025, a total of 9.8 million tons of grain cargo was transported via the KTZ network (+52%), including 7.7 million tons for export (+58%).
