In India, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), headquartered in Manesar (60 kilometres south-west of Delhi), has opened the country’s largest in-plant terminal for dispatching up to 450,000 vehicles a year. The 18.6-acre station is equipped with a centralisation system and has five electrified tracks with a total length of 8.2 km.
The terminal is connected to Patli railway station by an approximately 10-km branch line, a 5.7-km section of which will be part of the 126-km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC). The Rs 4.52 billion ($52.7 million) HORC project is being undertaken by the joint venture Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Limited (HORCL), which is also the operator of the terminal.
The plant’s products are transported by rail to 17 distribution centres from where they are shipped to 380 cities in India, as well as to the ports of Mundra and Pipavav for export. Since 2014. MSIL has shipped around 2.5 million vehicles to consumers. The company estimates that the commissioning of the terminal will reduce carbon emissions by 175,000 tonnes and save up to 60 million litres of fuel annually.
