PKP is consistently increasing freight transport capacity to the Tri-City ports. The construction of an additional track on the Pszczółki – Pruszcz Gdański route will improve capacity for freight trains heading to the Port of Gdańsk. PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. has announced a tender for the design and implementation of the project, financed from the state budget.
The development of Baltic ports means the development of the Polish economy, and an essential factor in this process is the growing role of rail in transporting goods to the docks – ensuring efficient delivery and collection. Further investments by PLK S.A. will provide more efficient, safer, and more environmentally friendly freight transport, with benefits for the surrounding environment, since more goods on rails mean fewer trucks on the roads.
We have announced a tender procedure for the design and execution of construction works for the project entitled: “Increasing capacity of the Tczew – Gdynia corridor: section Pszczółki – Pruszcz Gdański.”
As part of the project, we plan to add a fourth track on the Pszczółki – Pruszcz Gdański route (as track no. 2 of railway line no. 260 Zajączkowo Tczewskie – Pruszcz Gdański). The 4-track layout will improve capacity on the route towards the Port of Gdańsk and allow for the separation of freight and suburban train traffic from long-distance connections. This will make it possible to prepare a better passenger service offer, improve traffic management conditions, and enhance transport accessibility of the Tri-City for the rest of the country.
In addition to building the new track, the project also includes rebuilding platform no. 2 at the Skowarcz, Różyny, and Cieplewo stops into double-edge platforms. The new track, along with train traffic control systems, including the ERTMS system, will be adapted for train speeds of up to 200 km/h.
Signing of the contract with the selected contractor is planned for Q1 2026, with construction works scheduled for 2028–2030. The estimated value of the works is over PLN 180 million net from the state budget.
The planned investment is part of a series of completed and ongoing projects enabling longer and heavier trains to access the Tri-City ports, capable of transporting more cargo. Between 2019 and 2024, PLK S.A. improved rail access to the ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia, allocating over PLN 3 billion net for this purpose from the CEF – “Connecting Europe” financial instrument. Last year, modernization of railway line no. 201 Bydgoszcz – Tri-City began (since 2021, works had already been underway on connecting lines), which is of significant importance for increasing the capacity of the Port of Gdynia. The tasks carried out by PLK S.A. respond to the need to increase transport capacity on the railway network.
