MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world’s largest container shipping company with a fleet of over 850 ships and a global network of over 300 routes, is expanding its Albatros service from Gdańsk with direct calls to ports on the east coast of New York and Charleston.
Thanks to this, Baltic Hub in Gdańsk, the largest container terminal in the Baltic Sea region, gains a new, regular transatlantic connection operated through weekly sailings. The terminal, handling over 2 million TEU annually, is a key hub for Polish maritime trade, providing access to the global network of ocean connections as well as a well-developed rail and road transport infrastructure. This strategic strengthening of MSC’s service network between Poland and the USA will offer customers improved cargo flows and seamless integration with inland transport and logistics services provided by MSC.
The first voyage within the expanded service was carried out by MSC BERANGERE, which departed from Gdańsk on August 14, 2025.
An important transatlantic connection
Shipping between the USA and Europe, while still playing a significant role in global trade, today represents a smaller segment of world container traffic compared to Pacific routes. Transatlantic connections are focused mainly on transporting high-value goods – such as products of the automotive, aerospace, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as luxury goods – along with the exchange of energy resources and chemicals. In recent years, the growing importance of this route has been driven, among other factors, by U.S. LNG exports to Europe and increased imports of American agricultural products. However, container volumes remain limited compared to the massive flows of goods between Asia and North America, dominated by large-scale shipments of electronics, clothing, and consumer products.
