DB Cargo Introduces Hydrogen Transport Container

18 June 2025 | News

DB Cargo has unveiled a multi-element gas container (MEGC) designed for multimodal transport, including rail, of hydrogen under a pressure of approximately 500 atm.

The project was carried out by DB Cargo BTT in accordance with the decision of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in cooperation with Hexagon Purus, Endress+Hauser, Infraserv Höchst, and Fraunhofer IML. DB Cargo BTT, a subsidiary of the operator, specializes in the rail transport of hazardous goods, including chemical industry products (such as ammonia and methanol). Until now, compressed hydrogen gas has typically been transported in cylinders, usually by road.

The container’s design, weighing 1,223 kg, allows for horizontal loading and unloading. The required level of safety is ensured by intelligent sensors that monitor the container’s temperature and pressure, as well as vibrations during transport.

The container was first presented in June 2025 at a trade fair in Munich, and trial transports are planned for the end of the year.
